Smokers to go senile

People who smoke can lose about a third of their everyday memory, researchers say. Research by a team at Northumbria University shows that smokers lose more memory than non-smokers.
The study also found that those who stop the habit they have the ability to recall information back to the same level with non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy people aged 18 to 25 years and included a tour of university campuses.
Those who took part in the study were asked to remember the small details, such as musical performances that will be played at the student union and the tasks have been completed at various points. This procedure is known as a memory test of the real world.
Smokers produce poor performance, given that only 59 percent of the task. Those who have quit smoking since 74 percent and those who have never smoked since 81 percent of the task.
Dr Tom Heffernan, who led the study, said the findings will be useful in anti-smoking campaign. "Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and 45 million in
the United States, it is important to understand the effects of smoking on cognitive function everyday."
"This is the first time a study was conducted to determine whether smoking cessation has an impact on memory We already know that quitting smoking has major health benefits for the body. But the study also shows how to quit smoking can have huge benefits for cognitive function."
This study will now investigate the effects of passive smoking on memory.
